Christmas is a big holiday in the United States, but in many ways, it’s nothing compared to Mexico. In Mexico, the religious aspect of Christmas celebrations is much more prominent than in most celebrations here in the U.S. Christmas celebrations in Mexico involve the entire community, making holiday traditions a part of national and regional identity. Our team at Vallarta brings some of Mexico’s cultural traditions to you through our restaurants in Manchester, NH, but the country has so much more to offer than we can share through food.

Here are some Mexican Christmas traditions to help you get in the holiday spirit!

Las Posadas

Las Posadas is a series of processions that take place from December 16th through December 24th. Every evening, people, primarily children and young people, walk through the streets to represent Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for somewhere to stay. They sing songs that ask for help and a place to stay. The procession ends at the house chosen to represent the inn and offer the travelers shelter. There, everyone celebrates and enjoys traditional Christmas foods.

Las Pastorelas

Las Pastorelas are similar to our Christmas pageants or Nativity plays. These performances depict the shepherds following the star to find the stable where Jesus was born. Sometimes, these plays are funny and silly, akin to a British Christmas panto. Others, however, are more serious and depict the trials and tribulations the shepherds overcame and the obstacles the devil put in their way along their path to find the Baby Jesus. No matter the tone of the play, the end always represents the triumph of good over evil.

Noche Buena

In Mexico, the main Christmas celebration takes place on Christmas Eve, known as Noche Buena. Christmas Eve marks the end of Las Posadas, and they conclude with the main Christmas meal after attending Midnight Mass. The celebrations continue into the night and carry on into Christmas Day.
